  • Position Information

    Communications Technician
    The Communications Technician performs maintenance, repair and installation of land mobile radio (LMR) communication equipment, including base stations, repeaters, mobile radios and other ancillary equipment; maintain and calibrate gas detection instruments.
     
    Communications Specialist
    The Communications Specialist performs maintenance, repair and installation of land mobile radio (LMR) communication equipment, including base stations, repeaters, mobile radios and other ancillary equipment; maintain and calibrate gas detection instruments; install, maintain, repair and calibrate telemetry and electronic control systems for SCADA; cellular modems, satellite communications, microwave technology, radio frequency (RF) data radios, IP based communication; and other duties as assigned.
     
    This position is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) under Title 49 CFR Part 382 and Part 40.  Any applicant/employee who performs a DOT covered function or is licensed and would operate a commercial vehicle for the Company will be subject to drug and alcohol testing under the Company’s DOT drug and alcohol testing programs.  Any employment, transfer, or promotion offer made for this position is contingent upon taking and passing a drug test prior to the commencement of the new role.  If an applicant/employee fails the drug test, any offer of employment, transfer, or promotion will be revoked.
     
     
     
      

    Responsibilities

    Communications Technician

    • Operate communication test equipment and complete adjustments as needed on LMR communication equipment
    • Perform complex assignments; resolve problems
    • Perform complex assignments regarding electronic equipment for installation or maintenance
    • Complete assignments on electronic equipment for other departments
    • Complete transactions with customers, vendors, and other departments
    • Exercise responsibility for problem solving and troubleshooting problems encountered in the completion of assigned tasks
    • Maintain and calibrate Company gas detecting instruments
    • Promote good public relations
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    • Regular and predictable attendance is a condition of employment and is an essential function of the job

     

    Communications Specialist

    • Operate communication test equipment and complete adjustments as needed on LMR communication equipment
    • Complete installation of LMR communication equipment
    • Perform complex assignments regarding electronic equipment for installation or maintenance
    • Install complex wireless data link networks
    • Complete assignments on electronic equipment for other departments
    • Complete transactions with customers, vendors, and other departments
    • Exercise responsibility for problem solving and troubleshooting problems encountered in the completion of assigned tasks
    • Maintain and calibrate Company testing instruments
    • Perform complex network installation and troubleshooting procedures
    • Promote good public relations
    • Install, maintain, repair and calibrate, telemetry and electronic control systems, including communication links for SCADA at tap sites, city gates, pressure limiting stations, large customer metering facilities transportation customers and other locations
    • Complete basic natural gas control activities
    • Incumbent may work in the presence of escaping natural gas
    • Maintain dispatch consoles
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Meet and maintain the strenuous physical requirements of the position.
    • May be required to be on-call
    • Must be able to be contacted and respond for emergency duty.
    • Must respond to base location or emergency site within one hour.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or other special licenses/certifications.
    • Must be available to perform shift work, staggered work week, including recognized holidays.
    • Must be available to work overtime.
    • Must be able to wear a complete company-issued uniform.
    • Must be able to wear and use all personal protective safety equipment as operating conditions dictate.
    • Must be able to work in another location, district, or department.
    • Must be able to work outdoors, exposed to extremes in temperatures and conditions.
    • May be exposed to natural gas during the course of work.
    • Must successfully complete all aspects of required training.
    • Must comply with Company rules of general conduct, Company policies and procedures.
    • Must be able to fly in helicopters.
    • May require certification for tower climbing.
    • Must have the ability to drive over rugged terrain.

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN

    This position requires a minimum of two years experience in LMR communications. May be required to possess a valid FCC General Radio Telephone Operators license or equivalent.

     

    This position must have a working knowledge in the installation and maintenance of LMR equipment; test equipment for maintenance of a complete communication network; FCC rules and regulations.

     

    This position must also have a working knowledge of communication troubleshooting software, basic IP network typology, network troubleshooting skills and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

     

    COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

    This position requires a minimum of two years experience as a Communications Technician, or equivalent. This position may be required to possess a valid, FCC General Radio Telephone Operators license or equivalent and must successfully complete the communications specialist training course.

     

    This position must possess a knowledge of installation, maintenance and repair of land mobile radio (LMR), cellular, microwave and RF data radio equipment; test equipment for maintenance of a complete communication network Company policies and procedures; calibration of telemetry and electronic control systems for SCADA; FCC rules and regulations.

     

    This position must also have a working knowledge of communication troubleshooting software, basic IP network typology, network and component level troubleshooting skills and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

     

    Note: Employees must pass all written tests and/or hands-on training, or simulations as required for this job classification; this includes all the covered task modules for Operator Qualification. Employees must qualify in all covered tasks in their classification.

    Communication Technician
    Salary Range $26.20 - $37.41

    Communication Specialist
    Salary Range $35.44 - $39.38
