    Analyst II
    The Analyst II/Corporate Planning is an individual contributor included in Budget Management and Financial Control.  Additionally, the incumbent is involved in Corporate Accounting and Financial Analysis at Southwest Gas Corporation and its subsidiaries.
     
    Senior Analyst
    The Senior Analyst/Corporate Planning has multiple responsibilities designed to assist the Manager of Corporate Planning in maintaining the efficient operation of the corporate planning functions of the Corporation.  These responsibilities include budget training; preparation and review of forecasts and budgets; development of statistical and accounting methods to appraise operating results; and other complex economic analyses. In this job, the incumbent frequently exchanges information with department needs of units outside of Accounting and Finance.

    Responsibilities

    Analyst II/Corporate Planning

    • Coordinate user compliance with prescribed budget schedule
    • Prepare corporate level variance analysis
    • Identify and resolve incorrect budget data entries to the financial systems
    • Ensure proper safeguards for sensitive budget information
    • Coordinate with MIS on budget system improvement projects
    • Coordinate with Accounting Department on changes to Chart of Accounts and reporting
    • Analyze and interpret budget variances
    • Communicate budget policy to various operating areas
    • Compile company-wide operating and capital budgets
    • Provide guidance to operating units/divisions on preparing annual budgets
    • Maintain database for Company operating plan
    • Assist with training in the use of budget, forecasting, and variance reporting system
    • Prepare documentation of department duties and procedures
    • Prepare profit plans
    • Represent department at relevant interface meetings
    • Ensure proper safeguards for budget, forecast, and variance reporting databases
    • Maintain an adequate level of oral and written communication skills
    • Research and recommend improvements to existing budget methodology
    • Prepare responses to Corporate Planning data requests for use by Regulatory Department
    • Develop and prepare customer reports
    • Develop and prepare other analysis as required
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

    Senior Analyst/Corporate Planning

    • Develop written instructions and schedules for the budget process
    • Prepare and review certain schedules of the Corporation’s operating and capital budgets
    • Prepare and review certain schedules of the Corporation’s three-year operating and capital plans
    • Review corporate level variance analysis and interpret budget variances
    • Develop, revise, maintain, and enhance budget system program
    • Design and conduct training in the use of the Company’s budget, forecasting, and variance reporting system
    • Develop statistical and accounting methods to appraise operating results
    • Prepare responses to budget data requests for use by Regulatory Department
    • Develop and/or revise budgeting process
    • Develop operational and financial controls and safeguards to budget and/or accounting systems
    • Conduct cost/benefit analysis as needed
    • Develop complex models and/or analyses for planning and forecasting the Corporation’s operating and capital requirements
    • Monitor trends in budgeting methodology nationally
    • Monitor and report performance against long-range financial plans
    • Prepare presentations used at financial forums attended by analysts, rating agencies, peer companies, investors, and lenders
    • Assist in the preparation of financial statements according to GAAP
    • Analyze financial statements and reports
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    Analyst II/Corporate Planning

    There are clear precedents and practices which the incumbent uses to determine how this job is performed.  This position requires three to five years of relevant work experience plus a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to successfully perform the essential job responsibilities

     

    Sr. Analyst/Corporate Planning

    There are clear precedents and practices that the incumbent uses as guidelines to determine how this job is performed.  This position requires a degree in accounting or finance and four to six years of relevant work experience. 

     

    An advanced degree and/or a professional certification are highly preferable (i.e., CPA, CMA, etc.).

     

     

     

    Salary Details

    Analyst II/Corporate Planning:
    $60,289 - $75,361
    Senior Analyst/Corporate Planning:
    $71,798 - $89,747
